When you live by the ocean, you can very easily have your design ideas influenced by your surroundings. Pay a visit to any property, particularly vacation rentals, in the Sunshine Coast area and you are likely to see a home that has adapted nicely to its surroundings. This is done by creating a tropical vibe, which doesn’t mean the home has to be plastered from floor to ceiling with parrots and fruity cocktails. There is a definite way to get that tropical feel without going the cheesy route, and it’s a look that can easily be carried through to each room in the space.

One thing that will definitely help set that tropical tone is a heavy use of wood. The wood we use is kiln dried slab timber because it rids the timber of pestd that air drying does not control. Hardwood floors in particular are great for this type of home, as the cool feel of the floor will come close to replicating the feeling you get from walking into the ocean that lays just beyond the front door. A beautiful hardwood floor can really be made to stand out when soft colors are used on the walls, with light greens and blues a perfect option from the vast colour palette that is available to you. These are the colours that you will see when you look out the window, so why not make the interior feel as though it is an extension of the natural world outside?

If you have a property that has a second level, you will want to carry that tropical paradise feel all the way upstairs. Imagine having wall to wall French doors that open onto a beautiful patio that features plenty of space to relax outside. A hot tub and a barbecue are a great addition to any beachfront home, but just make sure to place them in a part of the upstairs patio that does not obstruct the beautiful view. Relaxing in your bedroom with the sounds of the ocean ringing in your ears is quite heavenly. If you are not convinced you could always try a slab timber cutting board in your home to give you an idea of the natural beauty of wood.

We mentioned earlier about using wood to create that tropical feel, and that doesn’t have to stop with the flooring. Rather than going with something bland and traditional in the kitchen of the house, you could opt to go with a one of a kind wooden kitchen bench using timber that is naturally sourced. Every area of your home should contain some sort of talking point, and a stunning wooden countertop that is truly unique will certainly make that happen.

While not necessarily wanting to go overboard with the wood, you can still add a number of fabulous furniture pieces in each room. Using different types of wood will deliver a different look and feel, which can help you mix and match with the existing d├ęcor in each space. Tables and vanities made from slab timbers create an amazing look, and once again, will have a totally one of a kind style that you just can’t find in your average furniture store. If you are going to live in a stunning location, shouldn’t the interior of your home match the beauty of the outside?
